LCGC’s 2018 Emerging Leader Award in Chromatography Winner: Zachary S. Breitbach

Zachary S. Breitbach, the 2018 winner of the LCGC Emerging Leader in Chromatography award, received his PhD in 2010 from the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). Subsequently, he worked as a research scientist at UTA while simultaneously aiding in the launch of AZYP Separations and Analytics, a chromatographic materials company. Currently, he is a senior scientist at AbbVie. Breitbach has already made important contributions to both high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC). In GC, he played a fundamental role in the development, synthesis, characterization, and utilization of highly thermally stable, high viscosity ionic liquids as new GC stationary phases. Two of the ionic liquids he developed were subsequently commercialized. In HPLC, his work covers enantiomeric separations, hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC), ultrafast and high efficiency separations, supercritical and subcritical fluid separations, core–shell bonded phases, and interfacing HPLC to paired io

Ron Majors, Part I: LCGC’s 2018 Lifetime Achievement in Chromatography Award Winner Discusses His Early Career

Ron Majors, the 2018 LCGC Lifetime Achievement in Chromatography award winner, has an outstanding reputation worldwide as a leader, teacher, and chromatography ambassador. Early in his career at Varian, Majors published his pioneering work on the successful packing of microparticulate (5-µm) high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) columns and studies on the effect of particle size distribution. In fact, he was the first to efficiently pack and commercialize a 5-µm HPLC column. Later, Majors became well known as a columnist for LCGC and through his work teaching short courses worldwide. As a result, Majors is often one of the first names chromatographers come to know during their education, and he is quite famous in the chromatography community. Here, Majors discusses his humble beginnings, career highlights, and more.

By Kevin A. Schug

Evaluating the ability of gas chromatography–vacuum ultraviolet detection (GC–VUV) to distinguish and correctly identify various isomer and isotopologue forms of an analyte through the lens of spectral similarity.

Mass Spectrometry

Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction Coupled with Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry for the Characterization of Polymeric Materials

By Peter Kusch

HS-SPME-GC–MS is a valuable technique for identifying volatile organic compounds, additives, and degradation products in industrial rubber, car labeling reflection foil, and bone cement materials.

Recent Advances in Comprehensive Chromatographic Analysis of Emerging Drugs

By Ira S. Lurie, Lauriane Tremeau-Cayel, Walter F. Rowe

To address the challenges of analyzing new illicit drugs, emerging techniques such as UHPSFC with MS and UV detection, and GC with VUV detection, may be needed, particularly for distinguishing positional isomers and diastereomers.

The LCGC Blog: There's More to HPLC Method Transfer Problems Than Differences in System Dwell Volume!

By Tony Taylor

The overriding majority of articles on problems with the technical transfer of HPLC methods ultimately focus on differences between HPLC dwell volumes. However, as the title suggests, there are many more issues which can cause problems in the transfer of HPLC methods, and I wanted to highlight some common issues that come across my desk, in the hope that it will help you avoid these problems in your own practice.

The LCGC Blog: Research on Polarizing Environmental Topics Requires More Than Just Analytical Chemistry

By Kevin A. Schug

Several years ago, I would have held the stance that environmental analysis was fairly boring. How complicated can water be? I am not ashamed to say that was a naïve view. It is clear from our research and related research by others on similar topics that much more work in these areas is needed. Standard methods cannot solely accommodate the growing list of targets and the multitude of unknowns associated with complex samples taken from the interface between the petroleum industry and the environment.

10 Ways to Break Your LC-MS

If there’s one mantra that’s essential for an LC (or GC)-MS operator it’s “contamination, contamination, contamination”. Keep contamination to a minimum and you’ll enjoy a reliable instrument; don’t take the necessary precautions and instead you’ll enjoy reaching for the vent switch and purchasing lots of spares.
