Tips&Tricks: GPC/SEC What is the Best Detector Sequence?

The Column

GPC/SEC (gel permeation chromatography/size exclusion chromatography) methods generally contain multiple detectors in order to gather more information about the molecular structure of macromolecules.1 Such detectors include: concentration detectors [refractive index (RI) and ultraviolet (UV) are the most commonly used]; molar mass sensitive detectors (light scattering, viscometers, mass spectrometers); and information-rich detectors [Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)]. Over the years the information and results available from different detector combinations have been the subject of various Tips & Tricks articles. Up until now, however, the practice and the impact of detector combination has not been discussed.
