Editors' Series: Multidimensional and Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography - Methods and Applications
Multidimensional gas chromatography is coming of age. There is greater awareness of the power of MDGC to provide enhanced analytical separation. Once relegated to a few niche areas, MDGC is now finding application beyond these areas, to become a more mainstream method. The derivative technique of comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) appears to have been a catalyst to the re-invention of classical heart-cut MDGC, and now that GCxGC has moved into new application areas, it seems logical to evaluate the capabilities for MDGC in a broader suite of areas. One of our recently published reviews examined the current position of multidimensional gas chromatography in terms of its two emerging technology areas of classical heart-cut MDGC, which has been re-invented based on modern microfluidic technology, and the exciting area of GCxGC. This presentation will review a number of the approaches available to bring innovative methods to the field of MDGC and GCxGC, discuss interpretation of some of these, and finally complete the tour of MDGC with selected applications.
