Rapid, Simplified Residual Solvent and Volatile Impurity Analysis Using SIFT-MS

This event is now available on-demand!

Event Overview:

Volatile impurities occur frequently in pharmaceutical products and packaging and are often of significant concern due to their toxicity. SIFT-MS is a direct-injection mass spectrometry technique that provides real-time, selective, and economic analysis of volatile compounds in the gas phase. In addition to routine volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chromatographically challenging volatiles, such as formaldehyde, dimethylamine, and NDMA, are analyzed in real time without requiring derivatization or other special handling.

This webinar will describe SIFT-MS applications in the pharmaceutical industry, including:
  • Its use as an alternative procedure for USP <467> residual solvent analysis, and opportunities for online solvent analysis
  • Rapid, quantitative analysis of leachable formaldehyde from polyoxymethylene polymer and PEG excipient
  • High-throughput headspace screening for nitrosamine residues in drug products
  • Fast turnaround, simplified analysis of ethylene oxide residues in detergents used for cleaning validation.

Key Learning Objectives:
  • A deeper understanding of how SIFT-MS can greatly increase sample throughput for residual solvent and volatile impurity analyses in pharmaceutical applications.
  • Case study examples of how SIFT-MS greatly reduces or eliminates sample preparation through direct analysis of formaldehyde, ethylene oxide, and nitrosamines in the gas phase.
  • The fundamentals of SIFT-MS which provides real-time, trace gas detection through one easy to understand instrument.
Who Should Attend:
  • QA/QC managers, scientists, and engineers
  • Analytical chemists
  • API manufacturers
  • Formulation specialists
  • Excipient, polymer, and packaging manufacturers
  • Pharma production scientists and engineers
  • CDMO testing scientists

Mark Perkins is a senior applications chemist at Element Materials Technology Laboratory Instrumentation in Cambridge, United Kingdom (formerly Anatune), and a global authority in automated SIFT-MS.  Mark has extensive experience in both conventional chromatographic methods as well as SIFT-MS. Prior to joining Anatune in 2015, he spent 12 years as a senior analyst and chromatography section manager at the Malaysian Rubber Board’s UK research center, working on regulated pharmaceutical applications within a GMP environment.

Dr. Edmond Biba is a Principal Scientist in the General Chapters Department-Science Division at United States Pharmacopeial Convention. He joined USP in 2001 and has served as a scientist in the Research and Development Laboratory and in the Reference Standards Evaluation Department prior to joining General Chapters in 2015.
Dr. Biba is member of Sigma Xi – The Scientific Research Honor Society, American Chemical Society, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) Q3C (R9) Working Group, International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) M7 (R2 ) Working Group, and a member of Product Quality Technical Committee of the Product Quality Research Institute (PQRI).

Leslie Silva graduated from the University of Calgary with a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology prior to a postdoctoral fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center and working as a Senior Research Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She led an analytical chemistry lab for a food and beverage startup in San Francisco for four years before joining the Syft Technologies USA team in October of 2020 as an Applications Scientist. Leslie works closely with both the New Zealand- the US-based sales and product development teams to develop applications and help customers with their SIFT-MS workflows.
