Matthew Bates is an analytical chemist specialising in VOC sampling, thermal desorption and GC-MS analysis. He studied Chemistry and French at UMIST, now part of the University of Manchester, before spending four years at INERIS in France researching methods for measuring chronic population exposure to toxic VOCs. He subsequently spent 15 years at an analytical instrumentation manufacturer, working on thermal desorption technologies and applications.
