Quantera Analytical’s Terry Bates discusses parallel headspace extraction for gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and direct analysis in real time–mass spectrometry (DART–MS) analysis.

Terry Bates is the founder and CEO of Quantera Analytical in Ithaca, New York, where he is driven by a conviction that complex science should be accessible to more people. He earned his Ph.D. in analytical food chemistry at Cornell University in Gavin Sacks's laboratory, combining headspace extraction with ambient ionization mass spectrometry for rapid analysis, and then spent three years at Bruker advancing emerging mass spectrometry techniques. That path convinced him that lowering the barrier to sophisticated analysis matters not just in agriculture but across every field that depends on it. He founded Quantera to act on that idea, and the company's first product, the Curio HS, reflects it. A parallel sample preparation platform for trace-level analysis in food, beverage and agriculture, the Curio folds rigorous scientific principles into a package that is simple to use and designed to fit the workflows they already run, making the science more accessible to the people who rely on it.
