Industry Roundup: Shimadzu Europa Names Florian Geistmann Managing Director as Jürgen Semmler Retires
Florian Geistmann succeeded retiring Jürgen Semmler as Shimadzu Europa managing director on October 1.
In a press release issued October 5, 2026,1 Shimadzu Europa GmbH announced a new managing director. Dr. Florian Geistmann took over leadership of the company's European organization on October 1, 2026, succeeding Jürgen Semmler, who retired on September 30 after five years in the role and nearly 40 years with Shimadzu.
Geistmann is a longtime Shimadzu insider. He joined the company in 2002 and has served as managing director of Shimadzu Germany since July 2021, after holding a series of positions within both the German and European organizations.
A Career That Began in HPLC Service
Semmler's retirement closes a career at Shimadzu that began in 1987, when he joined the company as an HPLC service engineer. In 2006 he took charge of the newly independent German organization, which he led for 15 years before becoming managing director of Shimadzu Europa in July 2021. In announcing the transition, the Shimadzu group expressed its deep gratitude for Semmler's more than 39 years of service.
Geistmann now leads the European subsidiary of a company that has operated in Europe since 1968. Shimadzu supplies analytical instrumentation and medical technology, including diagnostic imaging systems that range from mobile to stationary units. Its analytical instruments serve research institutions and a wide range of industries, including chemicals, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, food and beverages, automotive, semiconductors, and plastics. The systems support applications in process and quality control as well as consumer, patient, and environmental protection.
From Sales Specialist to Managing Director
Geistmann holds a doctorate in analytical chemistry. He started at Shimadzu's Technical Office in Munich as a sales specialist for TOC and spectroscopy systems, and he eventually went on to lead that office. In 2019, he moved to the European headquarters in Duisburg to head Customer Care, where his shared responsibilities included developing training, processes, and the after-sales division. Two years later, he was appointed managing director of Shimadzu Germany.
Priorities for Europe
In his new role, Geistmann plans to build on the customer focus that has defined his work at the company. "Understanding our customers' needs and maintaining close relationships with them have been central to my work at Shimadzu," he said. "I want to build on this approach at a European level."
Geistmann has also identified further development of Shimadzu's European clinical business, together with its pan-European clinical support team, as a key priority. "In addition, there are other markets where we aim to gain an even deeper understanding of our customers' workflows and find ways to simplify them," he said. "This also includes after-sales services, which should remain another key factor in customers' decision to choose Shimadzu and, in turn, contribute to our continued growth."
