Industry Roundup: Shimadzu Unveils New High-End UHPLC System Aimed at Reducing Laboratory Downtime

Shimadzu has launched the Nexera X4, a new high-end ultrahigh-pressure liquic chromatography (UHPLC) system designed to deliver sharper, more stable results with less solvent waste and downtime, aimed at laboratories running demanding chromatography and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) workflows.

Shimadzu, a major manufacturer of analytical and testing instruments, has released a new liquid chromatography system called the Nexera X4, designed for oratoryoratories that need consistent, uninterrupted results without wasted time or materials.1

The company describes the system as part of a broader approach it calls "Extreme Performance Liquid Chromatography," or XPLC, which emphasizes not just speed but also stability, precision, and adaptability across a range of laboratory workflows.

According to Shimadzu, the demands placed on modern laboratories have shifted in recent years. Facilities are handling more samples, working with increasingly complicated substances, and facing greater pressure to produce trustworthy results consistently. In response, the company says it built the Nexera X4 with an emphasis on steady solvent flow, minimal signal interference, and the flexibility to integrate with other laboratory systems.

The system includes several notable features. A technology Shimadzu calls Nexflow is intended to sharpen the readouts (or "peaks") that chromatography systems produce, without altering the physical dimensions of the equipment's internal tubing — a design the company says improves separation of chemical components and lowers the risk of clogs. The system's detector and sample injector were also redesigned to reduce signal distortion, according to Shimadzu, making the instrument suitable for both very sensitive tests and samples with high chemical concentrations.

To speed up analysis, the Nexera X4 uses a dual-plunger pump paired with a pressure-monitoring system, which Shimadzu says helps deliver solvents more smoothly and keeps results stable even during fast or high-pressure testing. An optional add-on allows laboratories to switch between solvents and remove dissolved gases more efficiently, which the company says can speed up method development.

The system is also built to use less solvent overall. Shimadzu says its precision injection and delivery components allow the Nexera X4 to work with narrower columns, cutting down on solvent use, operating costs, and environmental impact, without sacrificing performance.

For laboratories that pair chromatography with mass spectrometry, Shimadzu says the Nexera X4 is designed to preserve data quality throughout the entire testing process, from initial separation to final detection. The company points to applications like pharmacokinetic research — studies that track how drugs move through the body — as one area where the system's combination of speed, sensitivity, and consistency could be useful.

Beyond the hardware itself, Shimadzu says the system includes software tools intended to catch potential problems early and maintain data quality regardless of who is operating the machine. The company's Open Solution software is also designed to let multiple users share a single instrument more efficiently.
