Shaping the Future of Mass Spectrometry

Author(s)Aaron Acevedo

During ASMS 2025, LCGC International covered the most notable news from corporate and individual attendees, highlighting the latest advancements in mass spectrometry.

Mass spectrometry (MS) is widely used in laboratories across the globe for a variety of applications from food to biopharmaceutical analysis. The premiere conference for experts working with this technology is the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS), which was held from June 1–5, 2025 in Baltimore, Maryland.

The ASMS organization was formed in 1969 to promote and discuss knowledge of MS and similar topics (1). More than 8500 scientists are currently members, coming from across academic, industrial, and governmental laboratories. The organization’s interests include advancement of techniques and instrumentation in mass spectrometry, as well as fundamental research in chemistry, geology, forensics, biological sciences and physics. The group also sponsors the Annual Conference on Mass Spectrometry and Allied Topics, which is attended by more than 6500 scientists.

LCGC International attended this year’s ASMS conference, covering some of the various posters and talks presented while talking with many of this year’s award winners. At the conference, LCGC International spoke with a number of different award winners, including Michael Shortreed of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Tian (Autumn) Qiu of Michigan State University. During these interviews, we discussed their feelings on their wins, what their research entails, and how they are personally connected to ASMS as a conference.

With this video, we reflect on this year’s conference, highlighting notable presentations and discussions with companies and individuals alike.
