The 34th International Symposium on Chromatography kicked off on October 6 in Liverpool, featuring two plenary sessions and an opening ceremony.

A recent study examined three drug overdose deaths resulting from an Italian prison riot during the initial wave of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. To ascertain the nature of these deaths, a comprehensive toxicological analysis was conducted, employing gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to reveal high concentrations of various substances in the biological fluids of the deceased inmates.

The diterpenoid, paclitaxel, which was identified as a potent chemotherapy agent for breast and ovarian cancer originates from the Pacific Yew tree. The isolation of paclitaxel from its major impurities is shown with the use of Hamilton’s PRP-1 (5 µm) HPLC column.
