Event Overview:

Plastic pollution contaminating our environment, ecosystems, and food chain is rapidly gaining significant public interest. Microplastics, fibers, and particles <5 mm are an increasing concern the world over as we begin to understand just how far these manmade products have infiltrated into our oceans, soil, air, drinking wate,r and even food sources such as fish and fruit.

Global research efforts aim to identify, measure, and characterize microplastics found in environmental samples and no single analytical technique provides the full picture. In this webinar we will discuss advances in thermal desorption coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry for the analysis of microplastics which delivers:

  • Direct desorption of sample filtrates provides a robust, time-saving sample preparation workflow
  • Identification and quantitation of the polymers present in a sample, providing a concentration of each polymer for toxicity evaluation
  • A chemical fingerprint containing information about additives used in the plastic manufacture, useful for tracing the plastics source and original use
  • Chemical signatures from pollutants absorbed by the microplastics from the environment it has been exposed to

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Why measurement and characterization of microplastics is important
  • How to identify and quantify microplastics in a variety of matrices using thermal desorption and GC-MS
  • A new and efficient sample preparation and analysis workflow for microplastics analysis
  • The benefits of chemical analysis for discovering more about your microplastics samples
