
A new study revealed Australian drinking water contained 0.3–0.7 μg/L nanoplastics and 0.5–1.5 μg/L microplastics. Polypropylene nanoplastics were identified, with 10⁶–10⁷ particles/mL in tap water.

Dr Elvis Okoffo is an ARC DECRA Research Fellow at the Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences (QAEHS), The University of Queensland, Australia. His research focuses on developing innovative analytical methods to detect, characterize, and quantify microplastics, nanoplastics, and associated contaminants in complex environmental and biological matrices. He has pioneered advanced analytical workflows that integrate techniques such as pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC–MS), asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (AF4), and complementary nanoparticle characterization methods to improve the analysis of complex plastic mixtures. His research aims to advance our understanding of environmental and human exposure to plastics by investigating their occurrence, sources, transport, fate, and exposure pathways across environmental, drinking water, food, and biological systems.
