Analytica 2024: An Interview with Sebastiaan Eeltink

At Analytica 2024 in Munich, Germany, LCGC International talked with Sebastiaan Eeltink of Vrije Universiteit Brussel to talk about three-dimensional liquid chromatography (3D–LC) separations. Eeltink is a Full Professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Editor of Analytical Science Advances at Wiley. He is the lead investigator of the Eeltink Laboratory at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The Eeltink Laboratory focuses on developing and designing novel analytics for the high-resolution profiling of biomolecules and biomolecular interactions using ultrahigh-pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) and multi-dimensional liquid chromatographic workflows with mass spectrometry (MS) detection. In this interview, Eeltink discusses the concept of spatial 3D–LC, the challenges of developing said chip, and what applications 3D–LC can be used for.
IM-MS at Analytica: Its Emergence and Its Applications, an Interview with Tim Causon

Tim Causon is an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna, Austria, where he has worked since 2014. His research specialties include liquid chromatography (LC), molecular mass spectrometry (MS), and ion mobility–MS (IM-MS). Causon is also the project coordinator and doctoral candidate (DC10) supervisor for MobiliTraIN, which has the objective of creating standardized reference materials and protocols for harmonized, comparable ion mobility–high-resolution mass spectrometry (IM-HRMS) data collection, analysis, and reporting. As part of LCGC International’s coverage of Analytica 2024, our team interviewed Causon about ion mobility–mass spectrometry, its current capabilities, and how it can be evolved in the future.
Analytica 2024: An Interview with Elia Psillakis

Elefteria (Elia) Psillakis is a Professor in Water Chemistry at the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete, Greece. She is Head of the Sample Preparation Network of the EuChemS-Division of Analytical Chemistry and the Founder and Director of ExtraTECH Analytical Solutions, a spin-off company of the Technical University of Crete. From 2014–2016, she was the Vice Rector of Academic Affairs and Research at the Technical University of Crete. At Analytica 2024, LCGC International sat down with Psillakis to discuss circular analytical chemistry, how it can help improve sustainability, and why analytical chemists should be environmentally conscious.
Analytica 2024: The Latest Trends in Metabolomics and Lipidomics

During Analytica 2024, experts presented a two-part session on metabolics and lipidomics, with the goal being to better understand the science of cellular biology. The sessions were moderated by Anne Bendt, the associate director and scientific program manager at the Singapore Lipidomics Incubator (SLING), National University of Singapore and Guowang Xu, of the CAS Key Laboratory of Separation Science for Analytical Chemistry, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Dalian, China. The first part of the session began with a talk on the fundamental role of lipids in the immune system and the challenges that come with studying lipidomics. The second part of the study discusses using high-resolution mass spectrometry to provide high mass accuracy and reduce hybrid spectra and false annotations of glycolipids.
Analytica Examines What’s New in Phytocannabinoid Quantification

Medical and recreational cannabis has grown more widely accepted in recent years, though they have become the topics of recent scientific discussions. At Analytica 2024, four presenters held a session called “News on Phytocannabinoids”, where they discussed and quantified various components, including psychoactive components, of cannabinoids. Topics included identifying components within Cannabis sativa L., how laboratories test the legal components of seized phytocannabinoids, and how scientists are trying to draw distinction in blood testing between medical and recreational cannabis use.

December 6th 2024The Chromatographic Society (ChromSoc) has announced the winners of the Martin Medal and the Silver Jubilee Medal for 2025. Professor Bogusław Buszewski of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland, has been awarded the prestigious Martin Medal, and the 2025 Silver Jubilee Medal has been awarded to Elia Psillakis of the Technical University of Crete in Greece.
