At the 2023 Gulf Coast Conference, LCGC spoke with Jean-Francois Borny of Lummus Technology, who discussed recent developments that will shape how per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are analyzed. This interview was one of four conducted live at GCC 2023.

Borny spoke during the 2023 Gulf Coast Conference (GCC) in Galveston, Texas, with one of his lectures being titled, "PFAS – An affair of the forever kind."

Jean-Francois Borny graduated from Texas A&M University with degrees in Chemistry and Computer Science. He has been in the analytical chemistry field for over 35 years, working in refineries, instrument manufacturers, commercial labs, and pharmaceutical and petrochemical companies. Jean-Francois serves as the Scientific Chair for the GCC Technical Committee, Vice-Chair of ASTM D02.P, Chair of ASTM D02.93.2, and is the Analytical Service Manager of Lummus Technology. As the Analytical Services Manager at Lummus Technology, Jean-Francois travels worldwide presenting, training and setting up laboratories supporting the process technologies developed at Lummus Technology Research facilities in TX.

LCGC sat down with Borny to discuss the following questions:

  • Can you give us a brief overview of the work you will be presenting (00:15–01:47)?
  • What are some of the challenges that modern laboratories face as PFAS detection limits get lower (01:48–03:17)?
  • How is this method better than what is currently used to detect PFAS in water (03:18–04:58)?
  • What is the most interesting part of studying PFAS for you (04:59–05:59)?
  • What's next in your work (06:00–07:08)?
  • You are the chair of the GCC technical committee. Talk to us a little bit about that and what has been most interesting for you.(07:09–08:47)?
