The new Orbitrap Isora MS and Orbitrap Isora Pro MS join the Vanquish Duo UHPLC System and a newly launched Isotope Discoverer Software package to form what the company describes as an integrated, streamlined isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) workflow.

The core innovation is methodological rather than just instrumental. Conventional IRMS requires converting a sample into a simple gas before measurement, discarding structural information in the process. The Orbitrap Isora workflow instead measures isotope ratios directly from intact molecular ions using electrospray ionization coupled with high-resolution accurate-mass detection. That approach lets researchers capture multiple isotopologues in a single run and, potentially, resolve position-specific isotope information, a level of molecular context classical IRMS cannot provide.

Analytically, the two new instruments are differentiated by resolving power: Orbitrap Isora MS reaches up to 240K resolution at m/z 200, while the Pro version doubles that to 480K. The Vanquish Duo UHPLC handles automated sample and reference-material bracketing to support measurement accuracy, and Isotope Discoverer Software consolidates isotope ratio extraction, data filtering, and correction into a single environment, collapsing a process that previously spanned multiple script-based tools and days of manual data handling into a matter of hours.

For analytical chemists, the appeal lies in workflow consolidation as much as raw performance. Isotope ratio work has traditionally demanded dedicated infrastructure and specialized expertise; by packaging the technique onto a familiar Orbitrap platform with automated sample handling and integrated software, Thermo Fisher is positioning IRMS as an addition to existing high-resolution mass spec capabilities rather than a separate discipline requiring its own lab.

Dieter Hofmann, vice president and general manager of Applied Analytical Technologies at Thermo Fisher, framed the launch as an accessibility play, noting the goal is to "put powerful isotope insights in the hands of more scientists" across health, environmental, and planetary science research.

Application areas span several core analytical domains: environmental scientists could use the platform to trace PFAS and other contaminants through watersheds and soil; geologists, climatologists, and archaeologists could reconstruct historical oxygen levels and microbial activity from the geological record; bioscience researchers could probe how the body metabolizes nutrients at the molecular level; and food scientists could use isotope signatures to detect adulteration or verify label claims.

Thermo Fisher is positioning Orbitrap-based IRMS as complementary to, rather than a replacement for, its existing classical IRMS instrumentation, giving laboratories a choice depending on whether gas-phase bulk measurements or intact-molecule, isotopologue-resolved data better suit their application.
