Metabolomics Model Estimates Bloodstain Age

Kirstine Nielsen of Aarhus University (Denmark) discusses how targeted metabolomics ratios helped build a robust bloodstain time-since-deposition tool.

When blood is left behind at the scene of a violent crime, it can serve as important evidence, as being able to tell how old that bloodstain is could be a huge help to investigators. Knowing roughly how much time has passed since the blood was deposited could help confirm whether it is connected to a specific crime, for example as part of an alibi verification. Additionally, if the time of the crime is unknown, it could help investigators piece together the timeline of what happened.
