Industrial laboratories have played a major role in innovation and commercialization of new technologies in energy and chemicals. This lecture, presented by Joseph Powell, Chief Scientist at Shell Oil, will present case studies in technology development including enhanced oil recovery, chemical process developments with homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and advanced separations, and in biofuels and new energies. The breadth of laboratory, pilot, and demonstration plant studies required to understand underlying fundamentals and derisk scale up, will be described. While computational modeling is showing increasing benefit in a priori prediction, experiments remain a centerpiece for discovery and characterization of plausible ranges of performance. The art of fit-for-purpose experimentation and measurement, augmented by appropriate modeling, remains a key skill for the industrial scientist and engineer.

Multi-Step Preparative LC–MS Workflow for Peptide Purification
March 21st 2025This article introduces a multi-step preparative purification workflow for synthetic peptides using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). The process involves optimizing separation conditions, scaling-up, fractionating, and confirming purity and recovery, using a single LC–MS system. High purity and recovery rates for synthetic peptides such as parathormone (PTH) are achieved. The method allows efficient purification and accurate confirmation of peptide synthesis and is suitable for handling complex preparative purification tasks.
