Thermo Fisher Scientific (California, USA) has signed an agreement with Mitsui Knowledge Industry (MKI) (Tokyo, Japan) to be the exclusive distributor of MKI software for interpreting lipidomic research data.

Interest in lipidomics has grown over recent years because of the key roles that lipids play, including energy storage, cell signalling, and supporting cell membrane structure. Studies into the mechanisms of these processes are carried out to increase knowledge of metabolic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

"Analysis of lipidomic data requires an enormous amount of energy and time," said Takeshi Bamba, an associate professor in the Department of Biotechnology, Osaka University (Osaka, Japan). “With Lipid Search, we can successfully automate that process, to dramatically enhance performance. By simultaneously analysing more than one million mass spectrometry data, we can uncover many previously unreported lipids."
