John Lough

W. John Lough, after starting his career in the pharmaceutical industry, joined the University of Sunderland. He leveraged his industrial experience to enhance the university’s pharmaceutical science courses and currently leads the MSc Drug Discovery and Development programme. His research interests, influenced by collaborations with Indian universities and local pharmaceutical needs, focus on modern liquid chromatography (LC) technology for analyzing medicinal plant extracts and quality control. He has published over 90 research papers, delivered more than 100 invited presentations, supervised 32 PhD students, and edited or co-edited five books. He is a longstanding member of the British Pharmacopoeia Expert Advisory Group MC1 and has served on the Executive Committee of The Chromatographic Society, including as President (2007-2009). He has also consulted on chiral patent cases in North America and chaired the 8th International Symposium on Chiral Discrimination
