Plants that serve as both food and medicine play a major role in supporting good nutrition and overall health. The natural active compounds found in these plants can help boost the immune system, fight off cell-damaging molecules, reduce inflammation, and combat harmful microbes.2,3
Essential oils are fragrant compounds extracted from different parts of plants and made up of a complex mix of volatile, biologically active substances. Because certain chemical features in their structure make them reactive, they tend to break down easily when exposed to heat and light. Even so, essential oils are known for their strong antibacterial and antioxidant properties, which makes them a promising source of natural ingredients that could be used in food products.4,5
Why Are Garlic and Lemon Essential Oils In Particular Valued for their Health Benefits?
Garlic has long been valued both as a key cooking ingredient and as a traditional healing herb, largely because of its rich supply of sulfur-containing compounds. More recent research has confirmed that garlic really does offer real health benefits, including boosting the immune system, reducing inflammation, and fighting off cell-damaging molecules. Interestingly, how garlic is prepared, whether it's eaten raw, cooked, or used as an extract, can significantly change how effective these benefits are, which shows just how much preparation method matters when it comes to getting the most out of garlic.6
Lemon essential oil is typically extracted from lemon peels using a steam-based extraction process. It's made up of more than 200 different components. These naturally active compounds are known for offering a wide range of health benefits, including antioxidant, anticancer, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects.7
How Do Nano vs. Regular Garlic and Lemon Oils Compare as Anticancer Agents and Antioxidants?
A major focus of this study was converting these oils into their nano form. The researchers tested both the regular and nano versions of each oil against breast cancer cells grown in the laboratory, to see how well they could fight cancer growth. The results showed that both the regular and nano versions of garlic oil were quite effective at killing cancer cells, leaving fewer of them alive and functioning. Lemon oil, on the other hand, was only moderately effective, with more cancer cells surviving the treatment.1
The researchers also tested how well each oil worked as an antioxidant, using a standard laboratory test that measures how effectively a substance neutralizes damaging molecules. Nano garlic oil came out on top, showing the strongest antioxidant power of all the oils tested. It also did a better job than the regular version at maintaining quality over time, based on two standard chemical measures used to check whether oils are breaking down or turning rancid. Lemon oil showed some antioxidant activity too, but overall, it wasn't as strong as garlic oil.1
“The study,” write the authors of the paper,1 “concludes that reducing garlic and lemon essential oils to the nanoscale enhances their efficacy, particularly highlighting garlic's volatile oils as a potentially valuable remedy for human health compared with lemon's.”
