Interpreting Data from GC×GC-HRMS and AI-MS
LCGC International sat down with Chip Cody to discuss his work at JEOL USA, as well as how to determine when ambient ionization techniques should be used for analysis.
At Analytica USA in Columbus, Ohio, Richard “Chip” Cody, who is a principal scientist of JEOL USA, delivered a talk titled, “Snapshots to Separations: From Ambient Ionization Mass Spectrometry to GCxGC-HRMS with a Giant Searchable Database” (1). His talk took place on Thursday September 11th at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
Robert “Chip” Cody is an analytical chemist who earned a B.S. from Roanoke College in 1976 and his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1982, under the tutelage of the late Ben Freiser (1). After working at Nicolet Analytical Instruments, he joined JEOL USA, where he is currently a Principal Scientist. He developed significant mass spectrometry (MS) techniques like trapped-ion MS/MS and EIEIO and co-invented the DART ion source (1). Cody is a renowned expert in ambient ionization, a Purdue University Distinguished Alumni, and a consultant for NASA's Mars 2020 Rover project (1). He has authored many publications, patents, and scientific software, along with developing two scientific apps for the iPhone (1).
LCGC International sat down with Cody to discuss his work at JEOL USA, as well as how to determine when ambient ionization techniques should be used for analysis.
In this interview segment, Cody addresses how ambient ionization techniques complement comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC×GC-HRMS), providing insights into how to determine which approach is best suited for a given analytical challenge. He also shares an example where coupling this technique with ambient ionization mass spectrometry (AI-MS) can provide unique insights that would have been difficult to achieve otherwise.
This interview segment is part of our conversation with Cody. Throughout the next week, we will be publishing our coverage of the Analytica USA conference. To stay up to date with all the latest from our coverage of Analytica USA, click
