Thermo Fisher’s Chromeleon 7.4 centralizes chromatography and mass spectrometry workflows with networked access and data management.

Thermo Fisher Scientific has released Chromeleon 7.4, a chromatography and mass spectrometry (MS) data system designed to support enterprise-level operations and regulatory compliance, the company said in a press release on September 30. The software integrates functionality across single quadrupole, triple quadrupole, and high-resolution accurate mass (HRAM) instruments, with a particular focus on targeted quantitative workflows. Chromeleon, Thermo Fisher’s chromatography data system, was first released in 1996, and has since evolved to support a wide range of chromatography and mass spectrometry instruments, providing centralized data acquisition and management across multiple platforms.

Chromeleon 7.4 is intended to streamline data management in laboratories handling large volumes of MS data. Traditional workstation-based MS software often requires manual handling of datasets and movement between instruments, which can slow analysis and increase the risk of errors. Chromeleon 7.4 instead allows networked access to data, remote instrument control, and centralized storage, enabling multiple users to access and analyze data simultaneously.

This technology arrives at a time when laboratories are grappling with increasingly large and complex MS datasets and the need for integrated, networked workflows. Advanced tools can help to reduce administrative overhead, streamline targeted quantitative workflows, and ensure consistent data integrity—challenges that have grown as laboratories handle higher-throughput MS analyses and stricter regulatory demands.

Thermo Fisher positions the Chromeleon 7.4 software for use in biopharmaceutical, environmental, and food-testing laboratories where compliance and data integrity are critical. Its functionality is applicable to workflows including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) screening, pesticide analysis, and targeted biopharmaceutical quantitation.

The software includes visualization tools that allow examination of single-scan fragments and simulated isotopic patterns, which can aid in identifying molecular structures and confirming isotopic content. Centralized data storage and standardized software use across instruments aim to improve workflow efficiency and maintain data integrity.

Chromeleon 7.4 also includes features to support regulatory compliance, such as full audit trails, electronic signatures, and secure user management, aligning with GxP and 21 CFR Part 11 requirements.

At the 2025 American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) conference in Baltimore, Maryland, Thermo Fisher Scientific introduced two advanced mass spectrometers: the Orbitrap Astral Zoom and the Orbitrap Excedion Pro. These instruments are designed to improve analytical speed, resolution, and throughput, addressing the growing need for comprehensive data in proteomics, biopharmaceutical development, and complex disease research. The Astral Zoom offers faster scan speeds and expands multiplexing, while the Excedion Pro integrates Orbitrap technology with new fragmentation techniques for better characterization of complex molecules.
