Therapeutic peptides represent one of the fastest growing segments in the pharmaceutical market. To bring these products to the market in a consistent manner, high quality is a major concern and requires stringent quality control (QC) methods. This article discusses the potential of zwitterionic chiral ion-exchangers to support peptide analysis and quality control as a flexible complementary tool to monitor the stereochemical integrity and chemical modifications.

Chromatographers often use the terms carrier-gas flow and velocity interchangeably when discussing column parameters. In liquid chromatography, the two terms scale together, but in gas chromatography they do not. This month’s “GC Connections” investigates the reasons for this non-intuitive behaviour and how it affects best practices for gas chromatographers.

This instalment of “Sample Preparation Perspectives” compares the results obtained from a new survey on sample preparation techniques with the results of previous surveys from 1991 to March 2013. The survey investigated trends in areas such as technologies currently being used, sample loads, sample sizes, automation, the use of solid-phase extraction (SPE) devices (cartridges, disks, plates, tips), SPE chemistries, selection criteria, and problems encountered. Respondents were also asked about sample preparation technologies on the horizon.
