Exploring the Application of MALDI-IHC with Bottom-up Proteomics: An ASMS Interview with Ron Heeren

Event

At ASMS 2023, LCGC spoke with Ron Heeren of Maastricht University. This segment previews one of several ASMS interviews that were conducted at the conference.

Heeren spoke with us at ASMS 2023 in Houston, Texas, where he briefed us on his current research endeavors that involve using multiplexed matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization–immunohistochemistry (MALDI-IHC) with image-guided proteomics to further investigate diseases. The idea is that MALDI-IHC with image-guided proteomics can provide information from the same tissue section without the need for customized and complex instrumentation.

Heeren is a Distinguished Professor and and Limburg co-chair of the Maastricht Multimodal Molecular Imaging Institute in the Division of Imaging Mass Spectrometry at Maastricht University.

In this video interview, Heeren answers the following questions:

  1. How does MALDI-IHC combine MALDI mass spectrometry imaging and immunohistochemistry for targeted tissue imaging?
  2. What advantages does MALDI-IHC offer over traditional IHC in studying specific biomolecules in tissues?
  3. What insights can be gained from integrating MALDI-IHC with bottom-up proteomics in breast cancer research?
  4. How can MALDI-IHC and image-guided proteomics contribute to disease understanding and the development of new approaches?
  5. What are the next steps in a future study on this subject?

Our interview with Heeren was one of several conducted live at ASMS 2023. Stay tuned for our other interviews conducted at ASMS.
