The Application Notebook
Flavanones are a type of flavonoids occurring widely in plants, either in the aglycone backbone form itself or as glycosides. Flavonones exist in unique forms depending on the type of fruit and can be used to indicate the type of fruit that is being analysed. The following application introduces examples of high-speed analysis of flavanones in citrus juice using the Shimadzu ultra fast LC system, prominence UFLC, and the photodiode array detector SPD-M20A, focusing on narirutin, naringin, neohesperidin and hesperitin.

Figure 1 shows the results of simultaneous analysis of the four compounds and the analytical conditions are listed below. A photodiode array detector was used for detection. Under these conditions, simultaneous analysis of the glycosides and aglycones was achieved in less than 9 minutes.

Figure 2 shows the UV spectra of the four flavanones in the standard mixture acquired with a photodiode array detector. Extremely high absorption is evident in the vicinity of 285 nm. If these spectra are saved to a spectrum file or registered in a library, qualitative information can be obtained for peaks in an actual sample by conducting spectral comparison with these data, or by calculating the degree of similarity.
