While most chromatographers would agree that development of effective, short, and stable chromatographic methods requires elements of personal intuition and systematic screening, some might argue that it is in fact more art than science.

When Peak Scientific started manufacturing gas generators in 1997, we knew that there was a huge potential for our gas generation products, which include nitrogen generators for LC–MS as well as hydrogen, ultra high purity nitrogen, and zero air generators for GCs. 10 years later, we are still amazed by the rapid growth of the market not only for gas generator products but also for those instruments that require gas to analyze samples, such as LC–MS and GC.

I firmly believe that the most significant development in mass spectrometry in this decade - or perhaps even the history of mass spectrometry - will turn out to be the ability to measure samples directly in open air under ambient conditions. In my experience of using mass spectrometry for the past thirty-plus years, the biggest limitation has always been the need to insert samples into a high-vacuum chamber, or to dissolve the samples and inject them or deposit them onto a prepared surface. The ability to analyze samples immediately by using open-air analysis without these restrictions has been very liberating, and it has made it possible to analyze a much wider variety of materials. I no longer hesitate to try an analysis because I am not sure about extraction, solubility, volatility, likelihood of contaminating the mass spectrometer, or whether the sample will go through a GC or LC column.

Born from the garages of entrepreneurs, the analytical instrumentation industry's first 25 years were marked by invention and the establishment of core technologies. Invention continues, but the past 25 years are better characterized as a time of perfecting and reengineering, pushing limits, and consolidation - of the technologies and the industry. The specifications arms race continues as the players try to stay on technology's leading edge, but new technology introductions have been rare. Instead, the industry debuts faster, smaller, and more economical products that are customer-focused and user friendly. Hybridization is becoming common. An industry once driven by inward facing R&D departments is now driven by market demands.

LEAP Technologies, Inc. was founded in 1989 by three liquid handling automation veterans. Applying liquid handling to chromatography and mass spectroscopy for a variety of labs was the focus. LEAP started as a one-product company representing a fledgling Swiss company, CTC Analytics. GC applications in environmental labs were the main market. LEAP's expertise was integrating its GC autosampler and the headspace sampler into GC and GC–MS systems. Flexibility and portability were the key to selling these very reliable samplers. A second product line was launched that served tablet dissolution applications in pharmaceutical companies. LEAP applied that know-how and launched the Opt-Diss, a unique fiber optic UV system adaptable to all waterbath testers.

On behalf of New Objective, I extend my warm congratulations to LCGC in this, its historic 25th-year anniversary. New Objective shares in celebration, as we reach our own 10-year milestone in 2007. Back in 1997 when New Objective made its debut as a two-person corporation, personal risks were high, and the practice of applying nanobore reverse-phase chromatography and (nano)electrospray-enabled mass spectrometry was in its infancy. This past decade enabled us to participate in the growth, acceptance, and demand for both ion-trap and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry as definitive vehicles for high-sensitivity protein characterization and the now burgeoning field of proteomics.

To discuss LCGC's influence on MicroLiter's success, I have to back up five years or so and tell you how I entered this market. My degree is in advertising design. I have worked with regional advertising agencies and was at a very large international advertising agency, producing graphics for a variety of industries. I came into this industry as a business owner producing advertising for a fledgling autosampler vial company, National Scientific Company (NSC). I was contacted by a photographer friend of mine who owns Woody Williams Photo, who had attended Pittcon in Atlanta in the late 1980s. He had met the owner of NSC on the show floor, and he communicated to Woody that he had a new product he wanted to introduce and needed an advertisement produced for his industry's primary trade publication, LCGC.
