Barry L. Karger
Barry L. Karger, the Director Emeritus of the Barnett Institute for Chemical and Biological Analysis, is the recipient of the 2022 LCGC Lifetime Achievement in Chromatography Award. The presentation of the award will take place on March 28, at 1:00 pm EDT at a Pittcon 2022 virtual awards session. This award honors an outstanding and seasoned professional for a lifetime of contributions to the advancement of chromatographic techniques and applications.
During the session, Karger will offer his perspective on separations and analysis in the life sciences. With a 60-year career in analytical chemistry, Karger has much to share about advances in all forms of chromatography. He will discuss the impact of the separation science field in the biological and chemical sciences, progress in column technology, the emergence of the biotechnology industry, the success of the Human Genome Project, the wide adoption of liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS), the use of microfluidics, and more.
Among Karger’s numerous awards are the Steven dal Nogare Memorial Award for Chromatography (1975), the American Chemical Society (ACS) Award in Chromatography (1982), the M.S. Tswett Medal in Chromatography (1986), the ACS Award in Analytical Chemistry (1990), the A.J.P. Martin Medal (1991), the EAS Symposium Award for Outstanding Achievements in the Field of Separations Science (1997), the ACS Award in Separations Science and Technology (1998), and the Halász Medal of the Hungarian Chemical Society for Chromatography and Separation Science (2002). He has also received the CaSSS Award (2003), the Michael Widmer Award (2004, Switzerland), the Torbern Bergman Medal (2008, Sweden), the Csaba Horváth Medal (2008), the Golay Medal, (2009), the Csaba Horváth Lectureship (2010, Hungary), the J. Heyrovsky Honorary Medal (2010, Czech Republic), and the Arnold O. Beckman Medal (2014).

Obtaining Allicin from Garlic with High-Speed Counter Current Chromatography
February 14th 2025High-speed counter current chromatography (HSCCC), an advanced liquid-liquid chromatography technique employing both a liquid stationary phase and a liquid mobile phase (effectively eliminating irreversible adsorption), was used to harvest allicin from garlic.
The Next Frontier for Mass Spectrometry: Maximizing Ion Utilization
January 20th 2025In this podcast, Daniel DeBord, CTO of MOBILion Systems, describes a new high resolution mass spectrometry approach that promises to increase speed and sensitivity in omics applications. MOBILion recently introduced the PAMAF mode of operation, which stands for parallel accumulation with mobility aligned fragmentation. It substantially increases the fraction of ions used for mass spectrometry analysis by replacing the functionality of the quadrupole with high resolution ion mobility. Listen to learn more about this exciting new development.
Identifying Microplastics in Tap Water with Py-GC/MS
February 12th 2025A pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) methodology has been specifically developed for the identification and quantification of seven polymers commonly found in tap water. The researchers responsible for the approach state that it prioritizes both time and cost efficiency without compromising the thoroughness of marker spectrum detection and confirmation.
