Changing Lives Through Vaccine Development: An Interview with Ezgi Gürler of FeMS

We recently had a chance to speak with members of Females in Mass Spectrometry (FeMS) about their work and what Women’s History Month means to them (1). FeMS is a community-led initiative to create a network of support for women in the field of mass spectrometry, work to create communities where female analytical chemists can flourish (2). In this interview, we spoke with Ezgi Gürler, a researcher at BIOCEV. Gürler is also the European Chair of the Events Committee for FeMS.

Gürler completed her bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of Ankara, and later earned a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry from Leiden University. During her undergraduate studies, she completed her junior thesis project at Leiden University Medical Center at the Centre for Proteomics & Metabolomics Department (CPM) on C. difficile bacterial proteases under the supervision of Paul J. Hensbergen. She was part of the Analytical Development team at Johnson Vaccine and Prevention (Johnson & Johnson), in Leiden, the Netherlands, where she contributed to developing the glycoconjugate vaccine candidates (ExPEC Next Generation) and the MultiResp RSV vaccine projects in Dalton Lab. She joined FeMS as an events committee member in 2022 while working at J&J as an Associate Scientist in Mass Spectrometry. In February 2025, she transitioned to the lead as the group’s EU Events Chair.
