July 2008

20th International Symposium on Chirality ISCD-20 2008, Geneva Switzerland

The 20th International Symposium on Chirality ISCD-20 will be held from 6–9 July, 2008.

The backdrop for this year's event will be the beautiful and modern UNI MAIL facilities of the University of Geneva.

The Symposium Series provides an international forum for discussing and exchanging ideas and recent progresses on all aspects related to chirality in life sciences, chemistry, separation sciences, material sciences and physics.

At the event the Chirality Medal will be awarded to Wolfgang Lindner, Professor at the Department of Analytical Chemistry and Food Chemistry at the University of Vienna, Austria. His achievements in the field of separation sciences, in particular stereoselective separation techniques, are being recognised by the award.

Alongside the scientific conferences and specialized courses, an exhibition focusing on novel chiral technologies will be also organized, giving participants the opportunity to learn more about the latest technical developments in this particular field of science.

An overview of the event includes lectures, poster session and exhibition. Among the confirmed speakers are 2008 Chirality Medal winner Wolfgang Lindner, of University of Vienna, Austria, Dr Ivo Stary, Head of the Group, Chemistry of Functional Molecules Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry ASCR, Prague, Czech Republic and Keiji Maruoka, The Maruoka Group, Department of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University, Japan. In addition there will be short courses held in conjunction with the Symposium. Course titles include: "Analytical and preparative separations of stereoisomers by HPLC and SFC", "Enantioseparations using electromigration techniques", "Spectroscopic methods" and "Recent developments in enantioselective transition metal catalyzed reactions".

The event takes place in Geneva, which is situated at the southwestern tip of Lake Geneva, nestling between the French Alps and the Jura mountains. Geneva is steeped in history and has public and private museums reflecting historical events and relics from Celtic and Roman periods up to modern times. The city also boasts prestigious parks and gardens. Follow the stream of the Rhône river, through forests and vineyards, an untouched countryside awaits. During your stay in Geneva you can enjoy shopping, taste great food and visit a countryside with magnificent vineyards and fortified mansions and castles.
