Shimadzu UK has unveiled a new product evaluation laboratory facility at the analytical and environmental instrument manufacturer’s central UK headquarters in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.
“We are striving to make our new evaluation laboratory a centre for excellence where existing customers or potential new ones can be safe in the knowledge that they can try out various pieces of equipment and run them through their paces before finalizing on what is the best system solution to meet their particular application requirements. We aim to provide the best possible tailored ‘solution tool’ for their business,” explained Colin Jump, the company’s managing director. “The new centre will help us to support our customers and their Shimadzu equipment throughout its working life.”
The custom-built evaluation laboratory centre, which will focus on customized application solutions, includes 25 analytical systems featuring the company’s complete range of innovation laboratory products and a selection of the company’s array of LC, GC, LC–MS, GC–MS, spectroscopy instrumentation and associated equipment. The centre, which features a training and seminar room, is supported by an on-site team of eight laboratory instrumentation professionals to guide visitors through a thorough evaluation programme tailored to their demands. The centre also includes a fully equipped service workshop.

The Complexity of Oligonucleotide Separations
January 9th 2025Peter Pellegrinelli, Applications Specialist at Advanced Materials Technology (AMT) explains the complexity of oligonucleotide separations due to the unique chemical properties of these molecules. Issues such as varying length, sequence complexity, and hydrophilic-hydrophobic characteristics make efficient separations difficult. Separation scientists are addressing these challenges by modifying mobile phase compositions, using varying ion-pairing reagents, and exploring alternative separation modes like HILIC and ion-exchange chromatography. Due to these complexities, AMT has introduced the HALO® OLIGO column, which offers high-resolution, fast separations through its innovative Fused-Core® technology and high pH stability. Alongside explaining the new column, Peter looks to the future of these separations and what is next to come.
Investigating Plastic Contamination in Olive Oil with GC–MS/MS
January 17th 2025The objective of this study was to investigate contamination by 32 plasticizers in olive oil throughout its production and packaging process. Separation and detection were carried out by gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS), without the need for pre-concentration steps.
