An investigation into fluoroelastomer watch bands has revealed high levels of perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), a short-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS). LCGC International spoke to Professor Graham Peaslee from the University of Notre Dame about his team’s study using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) and PFHxA's potential for dermal absorption, and the subsequent environmental and health impacts.

The Chromatographic Society (ChromSoc) has announced the winners of the Martin Medal and the Silver Jubilee Medal for 2025. Professor Bogusław Buszewski of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland, has been awarded the prestigious Martin Medal, and the 2025 Silver Jubilee Medal has been awarded to Elia Psillakis of the Technical University of Crete in Greece.

Three analytical and two pre-treatment methods—gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS), and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) plus liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and dried blood spot (DBS) —were compared for the quantitation and characterization of barbiturates.

This month we interview Shijia Tang, principal scientist at Genentech, South San Francisco, CA, USA, about her innovative research focusing on the analysis of polymers and nanomaterials used in pharmaceutical analysis. Shijia decribes the benefits of an innovative in-line mixing modulation method for 2D-LC she developed for polymer and oligonucleotide analysis. The advantages of SEC–MALS to explore aggregation mechanisms for therapeutic constrained peptides and mRNA-lipid nanoparticles and their aggregates are also discussed.

This month we spoke to Zhuoheng Zhou from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium about his research on advancing instrumental and column technologies for modern chromatography and its applications in novel biopharmaceutical modalities and proteomics.

Leandro Wang Hantao is an assistant professor at the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Campinas in Brazil. His research group is dedicated to developing fundamental and applied research in all aspects of conventional and multidimensional gas chromatography, with a particular emphasis on chemometrics. His work has been recognized with awards, including the prestigious “John B. Phillips Award” in 2019.

LCGC spoke to Leandro Wang Hantao from the University of Campinas in São Paulo, Brazil, about his work investigating the influence of ion management parameters on the data produced by comprehensive gas chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC×GC–HRMS) equipped with a fourier transform-orbital ion trap mass analyzer, and his investigation into employing channel occlusion for sample preparation in untargeted analysis in petroleomics.
