Capillary electrophoresis (CE), introduced in the 1980s, utilizes the same principles as gel electrophoresis for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of charged biological molecules, including proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids as well as inorganic compounds.

When good things are given to us, or when we have never known life without them, we rarely appreciate them fully. This truth applies to many areas of life, but tends to be particularly evident with respect to modern conveniences and technological advances. Anyone with a teenager who thinks having a cell phone or an iPod is a requirement, not a luxury, knows this; pointing out that every generation until this one grew up without such devices rarely elicits more than eye rolling. Researchers at The University of Queensland have purchased an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography ion trap mass spectrometer, which they say will allow them to expand their analytical capabilities in environmental and human toxicology and help them to reveal the extent of environmental and human exposure to harmful contaminants.
