Continuing MilliporeSigma’s series of podcasts on the impact of water quality on chromatography techniques, Joe Plurad discusses the practical effects of ultrapure water in a specific area of analysis: The importance of water quality on perchlorate analysis by ion chromatography (IC).

The recent introduction of high resolution, accurate mass (HRAM) OrbitrapTM technology coupled to GC brings a new level of performance and flexibility in full scan acquisition and more. Comparable sensitivity and selectivity of triple quadrupole GC-MS/MS, but with broad scope, and the capability for simultaneous targeted and non-targeted analysis of pesticides at low ng/g concentrations, in complex sample types. In this Q & A, Paul Silcock discusses the story so far, around the use of Orbitrap GC-MS for quantitative and qualitative multi-residue analysis of pesticides.

Since their beginnings in 1986, UCT has evolved into a major competitor in the field of silica based solid phase extraction technology. The first to pioneer commercially available ‘mixed-mode’ SPE products, 30 years later UCT is still optimizing sample analysis for forensic, pharmaceutical, clinical, environmental and agricultural laboratories. Michael J. Telepchak, founder and CEO UCT, Inc., has laid the foundation for this powerful technology and has truly served as a catalyst for its transformation from a novel technique to an industry gold standard. From fundamental chemistry to manufacturing and business development, he has bared witness to all facets of the evolution of solid phase extraction and will speak on the monumental impact it has made on the scientific community.

Food contact materials contain low molecular weight additives and processing aids which can migrate into foods leading to trace levels of contamination. Food safety is ensured through regulations, comprising compositional controls and migration limits, which present a significant analytical challenge to the food industry to ensure compliance and demonstrate due diligence. Of the various analytical approaches, LC-MS/MS has proved to be an essential tool in monitoring migration of target compounds into foods, and more sophisticated approaches such as LC-high resolution MS (Orbitrap) are being increasingly used for untargeted analysis to monitor non-intentionally added substances. This podcast will provide an overview to this area, illustrated with various applications showing current approaches being employed.

This podcast will discuss the capabilities of modern ultra high resolution accurate mass (HRAM) spectrometry based approaches for comprehensive lipidome identification and quantitative analysis. Examples will be given of how this instrumentation can be used to overcome many of the identification challenges for lipidomics, the advantages of HRAM approaches over traditional triple quadrupole or high resolution based methods, and the biological questions that can be addressed.

Water is the most common reagent in the laboratory but it is the most misunderstood and is often taken for granted. Learn how specific contaminants can affect your chromatography system and results and understand how to optimize water purification technologies to meet your experimental needs.

Dr. Graeme McAlister of Thermo Fisher Scientific will discuss the advances in Orbitrap Tribrid Mass Spectrometry technology with the launch of the new Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap Fusion™ Lumos™ Tribrid™ Mass Spectrometer. Graeme will also touch on how these advances have impacted and will continue to impact proteomics with respect to quantitation, accuracy, throughput, etc.

The application of high resolution, accurate mass (HRAM) mass spectrometry coupled with multidimensional chromatographic separations, bioaffinity isolation techniques, and online sample preparation methods to detect, identify, and quantify emerging contaminants (including endocrine disruptors, pharmaceuticals, and surfactants) in wastewater and drinking water. The overarching goal of Lee’s research is to gain an increased understanding of how emerging contaminants are transported, transformed and induce deleterious effects within aquatic ecosystems.

Ultra high resolution, accurate mass (UHRAM) mass spectrometry, based on the Thermo ScientificTM OrbitrapTM technology, is a powerful new approach to high throughput screening and quantitation in complex sample matrices. To learn more about how UHRAM is used in the Million Metabolome Project, an ambitious milestone for Exposome Research, LCGC talked with Dean Jones of Emory University.Click to view the associated whitepaper
