Professor James Jorgenson of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in North Carolina, USA, has received the Csaba Horváth Medal and Scroll at the Csaba Horváth Memorial Award Symposium, Yale West Campus Conference Center.
Jorgenson received the award for his exemplary work in modern separation sciences, specifically his research in capillary electrophoresis and his proof of concept studies in ultrahigh-pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC).
Following the award presentation, Jorgenson gave a plenary lecture on a novel packing technique for capillary columns using thick slurries with ultraâsonication. The resulting chromatogram from these columns displayed a plate count of 500,000 plates - twice that of standard columns. Jorgenson also spoke about his recent research work on graphitic carbon packing, which shows high retention for polar compounds and unique selectivity for isomeric separations. - L.B.
