LCGC International Unveils "Beyond the Critical Point: Expert Insights in SFC"

Author(s)Kate Jones

LCGC International is proud to present a new content series on supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). Once considered a niche technique, SFC has become an established alternative and complement to liquid chromatography (LC) and gas chromatography (GC). Built around carbon dioxide as the primary mobile phase, its adoption reflects progress in instrumentation, column chemistry, and method development, alongside growing interest in reduced solvent consumption and orthogonal selectivity for separations that are difficult to resolve by conventional means.

This series presents conversations in which LCGC International speaks with specialists in SFC, including researchers, instrument developers, and practicing analysts, on how the technique has developed, current practice, and where research and development efforts are concentrated. Discussion connects the underlying separation science with the practical considerations that influence adoption, including the capabilities and limitations of modern SFC relative to LC and GC.

The series covers a range of topics, including the fundamentals of SFC, recent advances in technology, method optimization, and the applications where SFC can serve as an alternative or complement to conventional LC and GC. Discussion also addresses instrumentation and column technology developments, as well as how method development practices have adapted alongside these changes.

Application areas discussed include those where SFC is used in place of, or alongside, LC and GC, reflecting the range of contexts in which the technique is currently applied. Contributors consider how factors such as speed, selectivity, solvent use, and sample characteristics can shape the choice of separation approach. Insights are also offered into where current research efforts are concentrated, giving an indication of how the field may continue to develop.

LCGC International is looking forward to bringing you this content series. Make sure to subscribe to our social media handles as we work to bring you the latest updates in SFC.
