Traditionally, summer is a time when the worlds of lab research and business slow down to a large extent. If you work in academia, chances are many of your students have returned home for the summer and the teaching load has been reduce, while those of you working in private industry and research labs may see coworkers taking long-anticipated (and well-deserved) vacations.

Waters UK has reported that it is now a distributor of RECIPE consumable products.

A separation based on molecular size using GPC with organic eluents was demonstrated, along with a simple sample preparation procedure. Since this GPC application uses DMF and a small amount of lithium bromide as mobile phase, it will work on a standard HPLC system without any modifications. The molecular weight ranges (Mw) of the polyacrylonitrile samples analyzed were found to be in the middle of the linear calibration range.

Designed to Replace HPLC Systems and Accelerate UPLC Adoption among HPLC Users

By using a metabolomic approach, a group of researchers have described some key differences between stem cells and mature cells as well as metabolites associated with the transition between the two.

Peak Scientific Instruments, the Scottish based, global gas generator manufacturer has given itself a brand makeover.

Agilent Technologies has announced the completion of its acquisition of scientific-equipment maker Varian. The deal was reported to have cost Agilent approximately $1.5 billion in cash.

Thermo Fisher Scientific has opened a global food testing laboratory in Dreieich, Germany.

The Ron A. Hites Award will be given to Professor Facundo Fernández today in Ballroom ACE from 4:45-5:30 PM. The award recognizes a high quality presentation of outstanding original research.

It is shown how the amaZon SL, an innovative new ion trap, delivers class-leading analytical performance as a robust all-purpose instrument for a wide variety of chemical, environmental, metabolic or forensic challenges.

Prediction systems for chromatographic retention times.

The six presentations in this Tuesday afternoon session will examine various ionization techniques for mass spectrometry, including laserspray ionization, alternating current electrospray ionization, low-temperature plasma probe ambient ionization, electrode-assisted spray ionization, nano-electrospray ionization, and nanospray desorption electrospray ionization.

A highlight of today's festivities at ASMS is the presentation of the Biemann Medal, which will be given to Dr. David C. Muddiman in Hall 4 from 4:45-5:30 PM.

It always seems to be the case that time flies when you are either busy or having a good time, so as we reach this, the last day of LCGC's and Spectroscopy's coverage from ASMS 2010 from Salt Lake City, we certainly hope that time has flown for all of you. However, before everyone heads off to their next destination tomorrow, whether that be home or another industry event, there is still a great deal of science and technical material to take in.

Good Morning and welcome to Day 2 of LCGC's and Spectroscopy's continuing coverage of ASMS 2010. Hopefully you were able to visit many of the technical sessions and exhibitor booths yesterday, and of course, we hope you were also able to enjoy the many festivities last night in the hospitality suites as well. If you answered "yes" to the latter, then we also hope you packed some aspirin and would recommend drinking as much water as possible this morning.

This Wednesday morning session on the important topic of fuel and oil analysis will include discussion of techniques such as desorption electrospray ionization MS, TOF and FT-ICR MS, thermal analysis coupled to GC and photoionization TOF-MS, liquid chromatography and FT-ICR MS, ion mobility MS, and electrospray ionization MS.

LCGC Europe?s digital publication, The Column and LCGC North America?s digital publication, The Peak are to join forces to reach a global audience in July.

This session includes presentations of studies performed using mass spectrometry imaging techniques ranging from matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization (MALDI) MS imaging to rapid evaporative ionization MS (REIMS) for applications such as 3D assessment of tumors, acquiring information about metabolic pathways of diabetes, and examination of metabolic exchange in bacteria.

A major event taking place at ASMS today is the award presentation for a Distinguished Contribution in Mass Spectrometry, which will be given to Dr. Marvin L. Vestal in Hall 4 from 4:45-5:30 PM.
