With May's ASMS Conference now receding in the collective rearview mirror of the industry, the summer is as good a time as any to take stock of the analytical chemistry marketplace. This year's show, held in Salt Lake City, Utah, demonstrated once again the vitality and robustness of the field of mass spectrometry, as innovation and technological advancement were in evidence everywhere you looked.
Special Issues
The increasing use of pesticide testing coupled with reductions in maximum permissible residue levels of pesticides in food have driven demand for fast, sensitive, and cost-effective analytical methods for high-throughput screening of multiclass pesticides in food. Detection of 510 pesticides at low parts-per-billion levels can be achieved within minutes using orbital trap technology. The high resolving power of these systems enables accurate mass confirmation of all compounds, including isobaric pesticides. This article will provide an overview of current legislation and illustrate how mass spectrometry instrumentation can enable fast and accurate pesticide screening.
Special Issues
Fast turnaround time is critical in the clinical testing environment. Here, fast liquid chromatography (LC) technologies were utilized for the comprehensive assay of commonly prescribed pain management drugs in under 2 min. The use of fast LC also provided significantly improved sensitivity. A mini-validation for these analytes in human urine was performed and acceptable values for accuracy, precision, linearity, lot-to-lot variability, and matrix effects were demonstrated for each analyte.

Peas, beans and some other plant seeds contain proteins, called globulins, which have been shown to act as a defence against insects and other herbivores. Coffee beans contain large amounts of globulins, so scientists in Brazil studied the beans to assess their potential for warding off insects.

A study performed by researchers from the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies and the University of Almeria, Spain, has revealed the presence of 88 pollutants in the river waters of Madrid. The research, published in the Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry, found that while compounds are to a great extent eliminated at wastewater treatment plants, a fraction remains in the river water.

Good Morning and welcome to Day 2 of LCGC's continuing coverage of HPLC 2010. We hope you've been able to take in some of the sights and sounds of Boston, Massachusetts, in addition to attending the many technical sessions and exhibitor booths at this year's conference.

Squalene and squalane are oils, often used in the production of cosmetics and vaccines. Originally derived from the liver oil of deepwater sharks, squalane is also available from olives, and since 2008 some important cosmetic firms have claimed to switch to this more ethical squalane supply. However, the shark oil offers a higher yield and lower costs, so suppliers face the temptation to disguise the oil?s origin, while continuing to exploit sharks. A method in Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry is reported to reveal the source, protecting sharks, as well as cosmetic firms and consumers.
