Meeting the GLP-1 Experts

In the opening episode of this LCGC International Peer Exchange®, moderator Sam Whitmarsh introduces a discussion focused on the analytical challenges surrounding GLP-1 peptide therapeutics. Whitmarsh, director of analytical science and digital transformation at CatSci, is joined by two panelists with extensive, hands-on experience in this rapidly developing field. Nitish Sharma, assistant professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Analysis at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Ahmedabad, has worked with GLP-1 peptide analogs since 2018 and previously held analytical R&D roles at Sun Pharma and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories. Piotr Alvarez, senior scientist at the RIC Group in Belgium, specializes in chromatographic method development and has spent more than a decade supporting contract research organizations, including work on GLP-1 agonists and related peptides.

Before turning to the technical discussion, Whitmarsh explains why these therapies command such attention. He recounts a conversation with someone who had lost 40 kilograms while using a GLP-1 medication—roughly the weight of two packed suitcases—and describes the accompanying improvements in cardiovascular health, joint function, and metabolic markers. The example illustrates how the benefits of these medicines can extend beyond weight loss to affect several important measures of health and quality of life. Whitmarsh also emphasizes their extraordinary commercial scale, noting that Eli Lilly's Zepbound and Mounjaro together generated roughly $15 billion in a single quarter. The figure demonstrates that GLP-1 compounds are now as consequential for the pharmaceutical industry as they are for patients.

That combination of clinical impact, commercial demand, and molecular complexity has placed enormous pressure on the analytical scientists responsible for characterizing these therapies. Reliable methods are needed to establish identity, measure purity, detect closely related impurities, and support consistent manufacturing and regulatory decision-making.
