David Megson answers that clients should first understand the scope of what "PFAS" even covers, noting that regulated lists, whether the handful in drinking water rules, the roughly 48 regulated in the UK, or the 70 or more in many lab standard methods, represent only a fraction of the broader PFAS universe. He urges people to define their underlying question first, so labs can match the right analytical tool to the actual problem, delivering answers at the lowest cost and in the quickest time.

Pasquale Avino agrees, framing every analytical challenge, whether PFAS, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or cadmium in soil, around the same starting questions: what compounds, what matrix, and what procedure will best represent the sample and the real-world situation it's meant to reflect. He stresses that precise, accurate results depend on getting that foundational thinking right before any conclusions are drawn.

Vining builds on both points, noting that despite decades of refined instrumentation and technique, no reported PFAS value is an absolute truth; every measurement carries inherent uncertainty. He encourages clients to consider how precise an answer they need before commissioning an analysis, since some questions call for exquisitely low detection limits while others don't require that level of rigor. Ultimately, he says, the value laboratories provide comes from partnering with clients to clarify the question being asked, not simply running a default method and reporting a number.
