A research scientist has developed a new mass spectrometry method that will allow museum scientists to date ancient silks from samples that are far smaller than what is consumed during carbon-14 dating, the only other method that can date silk.

Proteome award

Dr Alexander Makarov, Thermo Fisher Scientific director of global research for life sciences mass spectrometry, has received the first HUPO Science and Technology Award from the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) at the HUPO 2011 10th World Congress in Geneva, Switzerland.

PerkinElmer, (Waltham, Massachusetts), has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Caliper Life Sciences, (Hopkinton, Massachusetts), with the goal of uniting key technologies for imaging, detection, and sample preparation solutions, services, and expertise.

Software and Data Handling

Recent years have seen the emergence of smartphones and tablet computers, providing even greater convenience and connectivity to users. These and other technological developments are offering more opportunities than ever to the already wide-reaching field of chromatography software.

Clustering algorithm

A position-specific clustering algorithm has been developed that can outperform current model-based clustering methods and provide a fast and effective solution for peak matching in large label-free LC?MS data sets.

Proteomics researchers are gathering at the meeting of the Human Proteome Organisation (HUPO 2011) from 3?7 September in Geneva, Switzerland, to define new short-term milestones for the Human Proteome Project.

Ethanol emissions

A technique has been developed that allows scientists to track urban atmospheric plumes from manmade biofuels using a unique isotopic signature found in vehicle emissions.

Meteor molecules

Researchers have found evidence that some of the building blocks of DNA that have been found in carbon-rich meteorites, may have been created in space and could have provided a molecular kit for the origins of life on Earth

Red, red wine

The cardiovascular benefits of drinking red wine are well known but far less well known are the mechanisms behind this effect. A new study into red wine polyphenols has suggested that they may be helping to protect omega-3 fatty acids from breaking down in the body.1

ASTM International (ASTM), formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials, is a globally recognized, non-profit organization made up of committees that develop and publish international voluntary consensus standards. Three ASTM committees (D02, D03 and D16) develop standards for measuring the physical and chemical properties of petrochemical products, including analysis of sulphur content by gas chromatography (GC) using sulphur selective detectors.

Bug drugs

A study into the way that the tropical parasite Leishmania uses the nutrients they need to grow has provided researchers with drug targets that could be used to combat them.

SMB collaboration

Dutch companies Batavia Bioservices and Xendo have announced a strategic business collaboration providing Batavia Bioservices with access to Xendo?s simulated moving bed purification technology.

Capillary Electrophoresis

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) competes with several separations techniques in the laboratory, including high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ultrahigh-pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC), and ion chromatography (IC). Participants in this Tech Forum are LCGC Editorial Advisory Board members Mary Ellen McNally of DuPont Crop Protection and Kevin Altria of GlaxoSmithKline.

Analytica India 2011

The increase in the demand for laboratory and analysis equipment in India is expected to be reflected at this year?s Analytica Anacon India: The organizers have reported that they are expecting around 140 exhibitors from 13 countries.
