The Application Notebook

Positron emission tomography (PET) is one of the most powerful noninvasive diagnostic tools for tracing organ functioning. Quality control of the short-lived radiopharmaceuticals is challenging, not at least because of the tough time limits, the radiation issue, and the near nanomole radiotracer quantities.

Ion chromatography (IC) is a similar technique to HPLC except that the detector of choice is usually a conductivity detector. IC is well suited for the analysis of a variety of inorganic and organic anions and cations.

The Application Notebook

This article describes a straightforward ion chromatographic method that uses isocratic elution and pulsed amperometric detection (PAD) to sensitively determine water-soluble polyols and sugar alcohols as well as mono-, di- and oligosaccharides in essential and non-essential foodstuffs. While carbohydrate determination of most foodstuffs requires only minimal sample preparation such as dilution and filtration, samples with interfering matrices such as protein-containing dairy products have to be dialysed before injection.

The Application Notebook

The fully automated combustion ion chromatography (CIC) system presented here combines a highly efficient combustion system with the separation power of ion chromatography (IC). CIC allows for the simultaneous, speciated trace analysis of halide (F, Cl, Br and I) and sulphur compounds (as sulphate) from sub-ppm to percent levels in any nonaqueous sample matrix.

Special Issues

Organic acids are present in many media and play various crucial roles. Low molecular mass organic acids (LMMOAs) have been researched extensively in many areas, such as food chemistry, as these acids affect taste, shelf-life, and food safety (1–3); agriculture, ecosystems, and environmental science, as these acids act as key components in mechanisms that some plants use to cope with environmental stress (4) and fertilizer release (5); biotechnology, to better understand and optimize fermentation processes (6,7); and biomedical research (8–11). Recently, LMMOAs were found to have inhibitory effects on the bioconversion efficiencies of lignocelluloses to ethanol (12).
