The majority of the human brain is not yet fully understood and we still have a lot to learn about its workings. A group of scientists have performed a comprehensive first characterization of the human occipital lobe (primary visual cortex) and cerebellum proteomes from 12 post-mortem samples.

The use of in vivo SPME offers important advantages over conventional methods according to the authors, including simplified sample clean-up, fast stabilization of unstable analytes, elimination of enzymatic degradation after extraction and reduced ion suppression for mass spectrometry analyses.

From sample prep to low detection levels to automation, environmental analysis provides unique challenges for analytical chemists. Participants in this Technology Forum are Kory Kelly of Phenomenex (Torrance, California) and LCGC Editorial Advisory Board member Pat Sandra of the Research Institute of Chromatography (Kortrijk, Belgium).
